Well fall is finally here and that means one thing for sure in Antigonish, Nova Scotia…giant bluefin tuna time! The Wild Blue Films has teamed up with Marlin Expeditions to cover the whole experience first hand. Marlin Expeditions has already scouted out the locations and lined up some amazing charters, now we get to hop aboard and document this incredible adventure. From the moment we landed and drove out to our Air B&B…we knew this was going to be a very special shoot and one that we won’t soon forget. The very first morning we headed out at zero dark thirty straight out into the wild blue in pursuit of these behemoth bluefin tuna. The drive out to the hunting grounds is always one of our favorite things…kinda like riding the bus with your football team before a big game. There’s not much talking but rather rehearsing how to go about shooting and the silent anticipation that it is. All this is quickly sprung into action as soon as we slow down and the lines are dropped in the water. It doesn’t take long at all before these tuna are on the line and our anglers are in the hot seat and in a battle. When I say battle, imagine 60-plus lbs. of drag and 250 lb. test line being tested to the limit. Also, plan on the fight lasting anywhere from 45 minutes to upwards of three hours as these bluefin tuna can be anywhere from 700-900 lbs. We saw both instances and we were left speechless as to the sheer power, strength, and size of these tuna. Suffice to say the anglers were exhausted. The entire three days on the water filming was one amazing adventure after another. There were numerous bluefin tuna landed as well as a couple great white sharks. The sights of the surrounding land and coves were spectacular and the captains and mates were incredibly knowledgeable and overwhelmingly hospitable.
